Translink tackles “Leaf Fall” challenge to keep rail passengers on the move
As Autumn sets in, Translink is taking proactive steps to combat the seasonal challenge of leaf fall on railway lines, ensuring safe and reliable journeys for passengers across Northern Ireland.
Each year, fallen leaves combined with wet weather and train movement create a slick layer on the tracks, similar to the effect of black ice on roads. This low adhesion can affect train braking and acceleration, which can lead to delays. To address this, Translink has deployed a range of innovative measures to maintain service performance and minimise disruption.
Mervyn McCollam, Head of Rail Infrastructure at Translink, explained:
“Safety is our top priority, and our teams work hard 24/7 treating around 30,000 miles of track each leaf fall season to keep our services running smoothly. To further manage the effect of slippery tracks we implement best practice preventative measures including track clearance, defensive winter driver training, and advanced technology to tackle low adhesion.”
In addition, Translink’s approach includes:
Year-round tree maintenance to reduce leaf fall.
Special Met Office forecasting to target high-risk areas during windy or stormy conditions.
Engineering trains equipped with high-pressure water jets and Sandite application—up to 100,000 litres annually—to improve rail grip.
On-board sanding systems and wheel slip protection on many trains.
Diagnostic and monitoring technology to identify and respond to low adhesion zones.
New trials of leaf contamination removal technology by track scrubbing teams.
In preparation for winter, Translink is also activating points heaters to prevent freezing and treating platforms during low temperatures.
Mervyn McCollam concluded: “We understand customers rely on us to get them to where they need to be. We’re continually building on and refining our plans from recent years to ensure passengers stay Better Connected and get home safely every day.”
