Phoenix Natural Gas 30%* Price Raise !

Northern Ireland consumers are to be hit with a price rise of almost 30% from the start of May 2008, with Phoenix Natural Gas rising its prices yet again. The average bill is expected to go up by £130.

As energy prices soar and in particular oil prices are the main reasons muted for this latest rise. However another NI company Firmus which supplies more than 3,000 customers will maintain its currents prices.

The regulator has approved the latest rises and the consumer watchdog in Northern Ireland has indicated the rises to be fair.

With this latest rise coming with other increases such as food and petrol prices, things are bound to get worse before they get better according to one observer.

Editorial

The ballyhack.co.uk team are not known to be mathematicians, but wonder why neither the regulator nor consumer watchdog in Northern Ireland are taking any action. Phoenix Gas has a virtual monopoly in Northern Ireland, with little competition and a captive market. It is the Northern Ireland Housing Executive preferred supplier with one tenant describing to me the tactics used to force him to change his heating system to Phoenix or be left in the cold. Getting back to the Math's:

In a approx. 3 years 7 months a combined rise of 88.7% 5 Rises

From my simply calculations in just over three years the consumer watchdog and regulator has allowed gas prices to rise unchallenged by 102.7%, which when adjusted for the 14% cut of last year gives an overall rise of 88.7%.

As belts are already tight, with people in great need, homelessness on the increase, begging becoming more noticeable, a credit crunch worldwide and DSS payments unchanged. It is the consumer watchdog's responsibility and the regulator's to ensure that we are not all put in the poorhouse and to fight for those who have fallen into fuel poverty, ensuring they get the assistance they need.

To our mind three organisations have failed Northern Ireland today.
