The Czech Courts today cleared the way for their President Vaclav Klaus to sign up to the Lisbon Treaty, which
would see an 'un-elected' President and Foreign Minister for the EU.
The Conservative Party and its leader David Cameron were hoping that Mr. Klaus would delay its country's
ratification of the treaty, until their expected electoral win in Britain next year. However, if ratification goes
through, what happens to the promised referendum on the treaty in Britain? Could Mr. Cameron and the Tories find
themselves in 'Czech Mate' by failing to maintain their word to hold a referendum on the treaty, would they dare?
Mr Cameron has said "time is running out" to block the treaty and that he is "disappointed" by the Czech
constitutional court's decision to push ahead with ratifying the Lisbon Treaty.
However, we pose the question, do we want to be part of a Europe that ignores an 'Irish No Vote', do we
want to be part of a Europe who is actively working to stop any chance of a British Referendum, do we want to be part of a
Europe that even the Czech President Vaclav Klaus is
skeptical of.
Mr. Cameron said he would decide "later this week" what to do about his party's pledge for a referendum, but should the EU attempt to
circumvent our rights to hold a referendum on the treaty, then we have only one alternative, as does the Tory Leader, to hold a referendum on our membership of the EU.
Should Europe fail to respect its citizens, then many Britons and other nation states will be considering their membership of such a
dictatorship. Britain knows all too well the price
of freedom and the cost to secure democracy, a
tyranny which we had to fight off twice in the last
century, it would be madness to hand ourselves to
our former enemies on a plate, especially without
'Czech's and Balances'.
Our View: If Europe
denies David Cameron the right to hold an enforceable
referendum on the Lisbon Treaty, then Mr. Cameron
must hold a referendum on our membership of the
EU.
