Library Closures A public
consultation is under way by Libraries NI seeking user
feedback on various proposals from improving buildings
and opening hours to library closures. Proposal 3
outlines in year one of the strategy the closure of:
1. Ballyhackamore Library -
Serving East Belfast
2. Ballymacarrett Library - Serving East Belfast
3. Braniel Library - Serving East Belfast
4. Gilnahirk Library - Serving East Belfast
5. Tullycarnet Library - Serving East Belfast
6. Woodstock Road Library - Serving East Belfast
In selecting these libraries along
eight others, Libraries NI considered whether the
existing library was:
1. Fit for purpose
2. Capable of delivering on the vision
3. In the right location
4. Sustainable

News Editorial
It now seems like an annual
ritual, where communities have to constantly fight off
Libraries NI proposals to close their library service.
Perhaps, it is time to consider restructuring the top of
an organisation unwilling to hear the voice of the
communities they serve. It would appear that the
proposals on offer would leave East Belfast with only
one Library at the Holywood Arches and is intended to
deprive one of the largest electoral constituencies in
Northern Ireland of an adequate education tool and
facility. The vision Libraries NI express is clearly
shortsighted and is being resisted by many including 'nipsa',
have your voice heard but hurry the consultation ends
5th March 2010.
