News: East Belfast Fire The
fire service were called to Mount Street
in East Belfast just before eight last
night (8th June 2011) as fire took hold on
what is reported to be an old disused
bakery. The
smoke from the fire could be see for miles
around the city, aided by the wind, At the
scene the fire service called for an extra
engine with ladders, so they could tackle
the fire from above, the building being
too dangerous to enter. As
you can see from the photos, throughout
most of the incident, the public were able
to get remarkably close to the burning
building, as the street had not been
sealed. Young children ran from location
to location, excited by the commotion but
unaware of the dangers. It was about half
an hour after Simply Belfast arrived on
the scene, before the police arrived and
closed one end of the street. The
building, situated behind Gowdys on the
Woodstock Road, saw flames lick the roof
for some time, until it was brought under
control by a single fireman, fighting it
from above. Speculation
was rife on the ground, last night about
the cause of the fire, but whatever the
cause, it is likely that the building is
now unsafe and will have to be demolished.
