Belfast News: City Council Fork Out For Public Art

Ever walked down the street only to find some idiot has placed an obstacle in the way under the guise of public art. Ever wondered just how much, Belfast City rates payers have forked out for such projects, well so did Simply Belfast, so we approached the council under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act 2000. Belfast City Council initially declined our request indicating that it would cost over a thousand pounds to seek out all the projects they have provided money to over a ten year period.

Belfast City Council's response raised questions, given the limited information we were seeking, had the council provided so much money to such projects that it would cost over a thousand pounds in staff hours to ascertain the details or did the council perhaps lack proper fiscal controls, governing public funds. if it would cost over a thousand pounds to determine how much they had spent on other such spends?

We reviewed their decision and succeeded in obtaining the following details:

In the years 2000 to 2004 Belfast City Council did not spend a single penny on such projects.

In subsequent years they paid:

2005 - £18,000
2006 - £97,500
2007 - £68,300
2008 - £101,600
2009 - £212,779
2010 - £32,175

Details of specific projects include:

Lets Twist again - £40,000
City East Building, Newtownards Road - East Belfast

Sweet Water Arch - £40,000
Car Park at Stranmillis Roundabout

Winding the Warp - £40,000
Intersection of the Crumlin Road, Clifton Park Avenue and the Oldpark Road

The Spirit of Hedge & Hound - £40,000
Falls Park

Family Tree - £40,000
Woodvale Park

The Mill Worker - £32,175
The corner of Cambrai Street and the Crumlin Road

Rise - £56,000
Broadway roundabout, Westlink

North Belfast Banners Project - £12,000
On a selection of buildings in the Carlisle Circus area

Portview Trade Centre Sculpture - £15,000
Portview Trade Centre, Newtownards Road - East Belfast

Gateway - £35,000
Carlisle Circus roundabout

Only the voting public can decide whether they wish to elect candidates, whose past record shows a history of waste, whilst others in the city are in real need. Do these people really lack basis understanding of their constituent's needs?

Are these projects 'Art' well everyone has a different view of what constitutes art, but Simply Belfast would argue that it is Street Furniture rather than art, for example, rate payers paid £40,000 to fund 'Lets Twist again' at the beginning of the Newtownards Road, East Belfast. This metal monstrosity, is, one would assume geared at attracting attention. Why would you wish to distract a driver's attention, at what is reported as a dangerous junction, where speed limits change, where two lanes merge into one and where the 'Art' itself is obscured by other street furniture. 'Lets Twist Again' - Have you seen it, Do you understand it, Have you ever parked up and walked down to look at it in person - NO! - Then its a waste of rates payers money and many of these projects have obtained not just rates payers money but other public funds

Its up to you - Belfast Art or Belfast Waste by Belfast City Council?
