UK Political News: New Labour Spin - Lower Depths

Watching New Labour politicians has become an nauseating experience and these last few weeks have left people wondering whether they really have no shame. In their calls for Sir Fred Goodwin to forfeit his pension rights, they seem to leave out of their well tailored message of spin that it was the incompetence of their government which cost the public purse so dearly.

But how can these politicians even have the nerve to question what another negotiated, considering their own actions, for it still sits fresh in most peoples mind that the Home Secretary Jackie Smith obtained a reported sum of £116,000 by declaring to the House of Commons, her family home to be her second home.

The New Labour attack on Sir Fred Goodwin seemed to be lead this week by Harriet Harman stating that: "Sir Fred should not be counting on being £693,000-a-year better off as a result of this because it is not going to happen."

But in her rush to meaningless rhetoric, she failed to state precisely how the New Labour government intends to retrieve the money, they lost through what many consider to be complacency and negligence.

The Question is surely if the shoe were on the other foot, would Ms. Harman be returning any part of her pension, negotiated with those the public consider to be incompetent, I doubt it. It is clear to most lawyers, observers and the public that this money cannot be retrieved and the nation is now questioning a leader who is wasting vast sums of money, having 'squads of lawyers' working on it, a clear act of desperation after the horse has long since left the stable. In typical New Labour style if you cannot win fairly attempt to win publicly and New Labour and Ms. Harman believe that this can be won in the court of 'public opinion', but it is our view that public opinion is against New Labour and reports of Ms. Harman's comments now serve only to feed speculation that she is positioning herself for a leadership challenge in the future. Tessa Jowell on the other hand had woes of her own, this year as an Italian court found her estranged husband David Mills who is a tax lawyer, guilty of accepting a bribe of about £400,000 from Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. Mr Berlusconi has since passed a law making himself immune from prosecution.

Mills who was not in court was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in jail at a court in Milan. His wife Ms Jowell was cleared of any wrongdoing after an investigation by UK parliamentary officials (last edited 17th February 2009).
