Just we you'd thought you'd seen it all - the reality television
production that is New Labour, goes and shocks the nation. In weeks that
have seen the Home Secretary claim over £100,000 by declaring her
family home her second home, in weeks that saw New Labour threaten the
former chief of RBS with legal action to claim back money lost through
their incompetence, in weeks that saw Sir Fred Goodwin's home attacked,
New Labour Employment Minister Tony McNulty is exposed in the papers as
having claimed up to £60,000 for a house his parents live in. The
Minister defended claiming thousands of pounds in expenses indicating he had acted entirely within the rules.
When questioned by a reporter for the BBC the Labour Minister
indicated that he believed that he had lived up to the spirit of the
rules and that he decided to stop the claim after reflecting on it over
Christmas and appeared to have no shame that at a time time when
thousands are losing their jobs around the nation, he appears to be
lining his pocket at the expense of the nation and all this despite
already getting a healthy ministerial salary. The nation can only wonder
why Mr. McNulty stopped claiming these allowances when he did and until
his expenses are published that is all we can do - surmise. Do we accept
a New Labour Minister at their word or do we evaluate his words and
question his belief, for if he truly believes he has done nothing wrong
politically or morally and truly believes he has acted within the spirit
of the rules, why would he stop claiming, why the need to reflect over
Christmas.
It was the Mail on Sunday that carried the story of 'McNulty's
Thousands' but it fell to Tory MP Greg Hands to lodge an official complaint about Labour
Minister Tony McNulty's second home expenses and on the 26th March the Parliament's standards commissioner John Lyon acted to investigate the complaint.
It is of some surprise just how many politicians have steered away
from the cameras on this particular story and one can't help but wonder
what other politicians are living within the rules, technically, but who
like Mr. McNulty may yet suffer a backlash of their own.
One thing is sure
it is a Scandal that a Minister of this Great Nation was able to
claim these allowances. It is Outrageous that he appears to
have No Shame, appearing on television indicating that he has done
nothing wrong whilst stating he no longer makes this perfectly valid and
lucrative claim. It is Unacceptable that he gets away with it.
Every decent citizen around this nation demands that the Standards Commissioner
act and this site calls on the constituents of Harrow to send a signal
to this man and to New Labour, on behalf of this Great Nation that we
don't accept your standards, we don't accept your spin and your expense
claim is rejected. Considering the mess this government has made of this
country perhaps it about time we changed their salaries to performance
related or commission only!.
