| Simply M&S, Simply Food, Simply Gone
Despite all the staff hoping for a reprieve and despite
M&S Simply Food being one of the Ards Shopping Centre's more popular
stores, Marks and Spencer stuck to their guns and closed the store on Thursday
the 19th March 2009.
With the closure inevitable M&S had discounted products in the
store by up to 50% during the course of its last week. Without ceremony,
without even a goodwill announcement from the centre, at five minutes to
four o'clock, the lights started to go out, baskets blocked the entrance
way as shoppers were turned away and the staff gathered just inside the
entrance for the last time.
Some store colleagues were visibly upset at the closure of the store, the
loss of working with friends and colleagues and perhaps even the fear of
having lost their job and the uncertainty in looking for a new one. The
end for the M&S brand in Newtownards was unceremonious with not a word
of thanks to the dedicated staff that served us all.
