Bogus Caller Alert For Belfast
Last Update: Wednesday, 24th July 2019 22:33
Detectives are urging the public to be vigilant following the report of an attempted burglary at a house in the Hornby Crescent area of east Belfast.
Detective Sergeant Corrigan said: “ We received a report that a man, claiming to be from a Housing Association, had called to a house in the area at around 3pm yesterday, Tuesday 23 July. He arrived in a white van and was wearing a pass, and stated that he was there to work on the shower.
“The homeowner later decided to follow this up with the Housing Association, who confirmed that they had not sent anyone to the property.
“In this case, the caller left empty-handed. The occupants, however, have understandably been left shaken.
Detective Sergeant Corrigan is making a number of appeals.
He continued: “The man is described as being in his forties, of slim to medium build, and wearing a shirt and work trousers. I am appealing to anyone with information, or who may have noticed any suspicious activity in the area on Tuesday afternoon, to contact us on 101, quoting reference number 411 of 24/07/19.
“I am also asking members of the public to be vigilant at all times. This is the second incident of its kind recently reported in east Belfast.
“Bogus callers use many guises. Genuine callers will carry identification. Please ask to see this, and inspect it carefully, before allowing anyone into your home.
“Please also look out for elderly or vulnerable neighbours and check on them regularly.
“Report any suspicious activity or concerns to 101 and in the case of an emergency please call 999.â€
