Million Christmas Lights Dazzle Lisburn

Last Update: Monday, 12th November 2018 16:02

In a first-of-its-kind for Northern Ireland over one million lights will dazzle Lisburn City Centre as part of its winter Lisburn Light Festival which runs from 22 November 2018 through to 25 January 2019.

Artistic light installations together with audio-visual technology and festive music will allow visitors to the city to experience a new type of festival that will see Lisburn join cities across Europe celebrate the magic of the season by illuminating their city centres.

The captivating light canopy covering the length and breadth of Bow Street will produce daily light shows and the new 40 foot animated Christmas tree in Market Square will sparkle, glow and flash in radiant colours projecting over the interactive light floor.

Speaking about the Lisburn Light Festival Alderman William Leathem, Chairman of the Council’s Development Committee, said: “This exciting new festival will really put Lisburn in the limelight with an impressive display of light installations and daily light shows. You can catch the first glimpse of the magical lights at the Council’s annual ‘Christmas Lights Switch On’ event on Thursday 22 November and a full programme of activities for the festival will ensure there is something for everyone. Many shops and restaurants will open later into the evening to ensure visitors can sample some fine food and engage in some retail therapy.”

“The Council is thrilled to bring this festival to Lisburn and we expect thousands to visit this spectacular display. I have no doubt that bringing something new and fresh to the city will have a positive impact. I would encourage you to come along and enjoy our fantastic line up of free events and make special memories along the way.”

Lisburn Light Festival is part-funded by the Department for Communities. Lynne Mc Donald (Deputy Director, Regional Development Office, Southern Area) stated: “The Department for Communities is delighted to be supporting this exciting new initiative and continues to work closely with Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council to support the regeneration of Lisburn City Centre.”

There will also be two ‘relaxed nights’ when visitors can view the light attractions with quieter music and fewer lights. These will take place Monday 3 December (5pm – 7pm) and Thursday 3 January (3pm – 5pm).
