Freeze Closes Belfast Zoo

Belfast Zoo is closed due to the ongoing weather conditions. The Cave Hill site has seen a large amount of snowfall and, for safety reasons, the decision has been made to close the site. Unfortunately, the zoo’s Wildlife Wonderland event will not be able to go ahead as planned on Saturday or Sunday and anyone with a ticket should contact the zoo directly on 028 9077 6277 for more information.

Zoo manager, Alyn Cairns, explains “We are devastated that the Christmas event will not be able to go ahead. We would like to apologise for any disappointment caused to the families who had booked tickets. Despite attempts by our team and external contractors to clear the site, the terrain and temperatures have unfortunately made it impossible to open to the public for safety reasons. Anyone who has booked the event can contact the zoo team on 028 9077 6277 extension 203 to organise a refund.”

Alyn continues “The cold weather undoubtedly suits some of the animals, especially the penguins! The majority of our animals have been born either here or in other Northern European zoos and are somewhat used to the seasonal nature of our weather. Those that need it, have access to centrally heated indoor housing and we tend to find that even the most delicate species enjoy exploring their new environment, even briefly, before retreating inside to warm up. The biggest issue we face is access around the site for delivery of food and other supplies, and ensuring that our keepers can get around safely but our dedicated team take it all in their stride!”

If you are planning to visit over the next few days, please call Belfast Zoo on 028 9077 6277, before you begin your journey, for up to date information.
